My point is mainly against open source model of development and also against releasing certain code to the public (from the publisher's perspective).

Google engine will not become inferior overnight just because Google decides to make it open-source. Although google will benefit nothing from it, the public will benefit. From the developer's perspective, there is nothing to gain.
