I don't know what design doc brings in millions of dollars. Software is code. code is just a way to convert ideas to useful software. So yes! for the most part, writing more code means more work done and more features implemented. It is rarely every the case that someone is writing a million for-loops that do nothing, in that case, such person should not be a professional programmer.
Things get done by writing code and this is what big companies do not understand. No wonder big companies buy their most impressive products from smaller startups. This is because big companies work with lots of shenanigans while start-ups and smaller companies build real products that end up being bought by bigger companies.
